====== Glossary ====== ===== In-Character [IC] Terms ===== ==== Offline ==== === Bangin' === An alternative adjective to "cool". Other alternatives include "sweet", "dope", etc. **__Example:__** Woah, that new Nessie pic was totally //bangin'//, man. === Boo-yah! === A term used to laugh in the face of danger, to dive head-first into the unknown, to say "bring it on" to the impossible; all with an assumption that nothing bad could possibly happen because you're protected by two whole syllables. Spellings are known to vary, but if you hear something that sounds roughly the same then it's safe to assume that - unless proven otherwise - it's probably this word. Interjection. Something. **__Known synonyms:__** //Banzai// === Dude === Dude, come on. You know what this means. You got this, dude. === Oh snap! === A term used to react to something someone says or does. Can indicate a range of emotions, including: feeling scandalised; being impressed at someone else's achievements/comebacks; when surprised; etc. Will often require an exclamation mark, but linguists disagree on the nuances of this point. **__Example:__** Oh snap, you did //not// just say you didn't know what "oh snap!" means... === Props === Not to be confused with anything to do with set design. Props, short for "proper acknowledgement", is a word used by very serious people((And plenty of not so serious people)) to acknowledge when someone has done something impressive enough to praise. Can be used in place of more detailed words of praise, especially if you don't actually know what else to say. Compare //kudos//. === Talk to the hand === Used to show dislike for someone, or what someone has said. Often contemptuous but can be used as a joke. A phrase that has been scientifically proven to become 10% more powerful if you physically make a palm-out hand gesture while saying it. The efficacy of gesturing while typing at a keyboard is currently debated. ==== Online==== === 1337speak/Leetspeak=== A clever system of replacing certain letters or words with numbers and/or symbols to send coded messages, 133tspeak can be used when you think someone's watching but you d0n'7 w@n7 2 8 533n. Or you just like numbers more than 13773r5. Other common replacements from leetspeak include removing the "e" in the "-ed" suffix, or replacing it with an apostrophe for emphasis; or adding suffix "-age" to denote someone having greater mastery of a skill, such as "pawnage" to show mastery of selling used items. === n00b=== Sometimes romanised to "noob" and traditionally pronounced in the same way, this term is used to describe someone who is new to something and may therefore lack some skill - in other words, a newbie. Usually used to describe being new to, or inept at, a certain type of digital content, such as a video game, but can be used more generally to describe someone who is a novice at a non-digital skill, such as a new hacksaw user. === ROFL=== Prounounced ROFF-ul, this acronym stands for "Rolling on the Floor Laughing", and can be used to describe extreme amusement at an online comment, or the less controlled reactions after. === TMOT=== A flexible acronym with two main meanings: "Trust Me On This", or "The Moment Of Truth". Sometimes both can apply at once. TMOT. === Woot!=== Sometimes replaced with leetspeak version, "w00t", this is a mysterious term with no clear origin and the vague intent of expressing excitement in response to something, such as a band tour passing by your town, or the band tour ending abruptly before it can reach you. === WYSIWYG=== Pronounced WIZ-ee-wig, WYSIWYG is a term that is often used to describe the straightforward such as basic online chat systems or bus timetables. Both examples are clearly demonstrating that what you see is what you get. ===== Out-of-Character [OC] Terms ===== === IC - In Character === Stuff or events that are in the world of CryptoNet. Examples include the weirdness going down on the [[http://idon'tremembertheforumlink|forum]], and player characters((who will not instigate any of the forum weirdness. Clearly.)). === OC or OOC - Out of Character === Stuff or events that are in the world beyond the game of CryptoNet. For example, the players themselves, or the time said players spend not on the forum or sending emails in character. === PC - Player Character === You! The characters that CryptoNet players create and represent in the fictional world. Though you will usually play the same character, if something were to happen to the character to render them unplayable((Examples include death, or the chronic need to never, ever move from a certain spot, because why would your character ever want to leave it?)) or you get bored enough with one character to want to switch out, the option to change to a new PC is always [[gm@cryptonet.chaosdeathfish.com|just an email away...]] === NPC - Non-Player Character === While the player characters may make up part of the population of the world, they are by no means the whole world's population. Enter the NPCs: characters who exist in the CrytoNet setting. NPCs occur in the wilds of the forum (played by the GM team). You may also know them from your backstory. Even turnsheets are regular haunting grounds for NPCs big and small. Much like player characters, NPCs may be contacted via forums and/or email. And, much like player characters, they may choose to respond, or you may end up the lucky recipient of an out of office email. As part of CryptoNet's immersion, we are not going to reveal which characters are NPCs until the end. Be aware that some characters you think may be NPCs may have a real, live player behind them((The GMs behind NPCs are, of course, unspeakable monstrosities and the extent to which they can be classed as alive is debatable)), and so we discourage you from emailing the GM team asking to be contacted by a certain NPC unless you are 100% sure they are, in fact, an NPC. === GM - Game Master / Game Moderator === The team of people who write, run, and maintain the game of CryptoNet for your playing pleasure. As a helpful font of knowledge, the GM team are the first place to turn to if you have any questions, want to check any information, want to clarify something unclear in turnsheets, etc. We can be reached by email at [[gm@cryptonet.chaosdeathfish.com]]. === PvE & PvP - Player vs Environment & Player vs Player === PvE (character versus the world around them; a world that may or may not be trying to hurt you) and PvP (character versus character; and who's to say whether that's a good or bad thing?) are terms used to describe the nature of conflict (not necessarily violent!) within the system. While CryptoNet is expected to be primarily a PvE experience, PvP is not impossible should individual characters take it there. For further information on our policy on either PvE or PvP, we've got [[pveandpvp|a page]] for that may be of interest. === Turnsheets === Although the forum will be closed during downtime, your character may well be active in the world in some weird and wonderful way. Before the end of each uptime, you can submit a turnsheet, detailing one major thing your character plans to do between turns, along with some minor activities((Such as sending some post, or spreading a rumour)). Before the start of the next uptime, GMs will give feedback to describe how that went. See [[turnsheets|the turnsheets page]] for more details. ==Eternity== The final turnsheet is called an Eternity. Instead of representing what your character is up to between turns, the Eternity will represent what your character does for the rest of their life. More specific details will be released closer to the relevant time: before or during the final uptime. ===Uptime=== This is the time when you can actively post on the [[http://cryptonet.boards.net/|Forum]], contact other players or GMs in character, either on the boards or through the lovely medium of email, post in [[encounters|Encounter]] threads, and generally scheme make plans with PCs/NPCs. At the end of each Uptime, you can submit a turnsheet. Details on uptime timings can be found on the [[new_to_roleplaying#Uptime_times|Introduction page]]. ===Downtime=== Unfortunately, uptime must eventually end. This will happen after the turnsheet deadline. During downtime, you cannot post on the forum, or email other PCs/NPCs. The GM team will send an email announcing the end of each downtime. Again, details on timings can be found on the [[new_to_roleplaying#Uptime_times|Introduction page]].
