Subject 7897 - Magdalena "Lena" Olsen AKA The Singer Calypso

Music? Sure, we've heard it all before. But Calypso's latest album doesn't just transcend that; it's transcendent. You'll find yourself chanting her name in no time.
— Quote from Smash Hit magazine

Week Report X-41Q

Day 1

Infiltration of local chapter of cult “The Holy Church of The Singer” has been successful. They welcomed me with open arms and, apparently, open hearts. No one questioned my motives. They only wanted to know “how they could help me”. No questions raised over my “former coach” cover story.

Ended the day with a song.

Day 2

Began the day with a song. Community clean-up day. Time dedicated to cleaning up garbage from local lake. Locals smiling, happy. Several offered snacks, which the cultists duly exchanged for cake and smiles.

Day 3

Embraced today's activities with the willing acceptance that seems to be the norm here. Prepared soup for soup kitchen, and coached one of the youth football groups. All welcome, all supported, and cheers all round for both winners and losers. Crowd chanting something passably a song from the sidelines, involving love, support, Calypso's story, etc. Hypothesis that this is a cover for illicit activities has yet to be refuted. Tomorrow I infiltrate the record room.

Day 4

Record room a disappointment. Records of different members of the cult available (photographs attached), but primary focus seems to be on how to “help” these people “make their lives better”. Even the accountant is motivated to keep everything above board: Church of The Singer doesn't have so much as a calculation error. Every decimal point exactly where expected, and lines up with external observations (see: Week Report X-41N, X-39Z). Found draft of new song from Subject 2758 (“Noel Winter”). Some notes found in the margins. Rhyme scheme “precise” and “moving”.

Day 5

Spent time today meeting with cultists' families covertly and discussing how their lives have been affected. Details long and excessively good. Suggest brainwashing. Was asked to share my favourite Calypso song during one discussion. Insisted it was difficult to pick. He sang me his favourite instead.

Day 6

Hypothesis of brainwashing tested. Brought in detector with aim of finding hive mind's influence. Finding none, asked two cultists to help me with some “coaching experiments”. Only too willing to help, I hoped to find anything, but was again disappointed: everyone is clean as a whistle. Not so much as a successful drug test.

In the evening, we went in turns sharing stories. Found myself opening up. Blame the atmosphere. Can confirm that cover story still intact, and details shared were purely personal; no work details compromised. Shed some tears. Can confirm these were professional, to maintain cover. Inevitably, held hands and sang at the end. More tears, etc.

Day 7

Flurry of activity as Calypso herself made a surprise appearance. Brandon Andrew Jones accompanied her as part of an “unofficial tour”. I confess, their relationship as colleagues is admirable: both support each other and treat each other with the easy respect of close friends.

After they sang (a great amount of crying and cheering ensued. I followed suit to “maintain cover”), Calypso moved through the room and greeted every person by name, except those who had joined within the last fortnight. She was curious to know us and so we introduced ourselves in turn, shared things about ourselves. She had a smile like a warm hug from a best friend: unnervingly gentle and warm. Found myself asking - under guise of joke - what she would do if I were trying to find out what she was “really” up to. She laughed and invited me to go through records with her, including details kept in a hidden safe I had previously missed. At the end of our tour, she insisted I take one of the building's skeleton keys, and welcomed me to look through to my heart's content.

This is my intention. Working hypothesis: nothing to be found.

Extract from diary of Subject 7897.3 (Eliana Olsen)

HOLY COW. I don't even remember Brandon in person but I remember him from pictures and my m- Calypso's music video and if dad's back then it makes a lot of sense for stepdad 1 and stepdad 2 to be back but wow he was at the house and then. AND THEN. He punched dad. IN. THE. FACE. And THEN he said “you know what you did” and walked out and WOW. That's what he gets for trying to sell people to demons.

Yeah, I still haven't forgiven him for that. But someone needs to be the mature adult in this relationship and no way it's gonna be dad. After I got him a bag of frozen peas from the fridge to put on his face I said let's watch a film. So we watched one of mom's old films, back when she was still mom.

I still miss her sometimes. At least Calypso and I are friends though. I like that, dear diary. I really do.
