- From the corrupted CryptoNet archives
1997 is pretty unremarkable so far. Things are very normal. They are only ever normal. But, while the world paints itself normal, you know that isn't quite right. Whether you're hunting for your truth or looking to kill an idle afternoon learning about supernatural conspiracies, the CryptoNet forum is as good a place as any to talk. When it's all theory, what's the worst that could happen?
CryptoNet is a forum-based roleplaying game taking place over the 2019 Summer Vacation. Players take on the role of characters who participate in an online forum called CryptoNet during the summer of 1997, and will be taking place online as well as offline within the game itself. The game is open to newbies and veterans alike, with the Introduction page being a good place to start if you've never played a game like this before.
We ask that all players please look over the Conduct and Themes page before signing up.

Turn 3 | 27th July - 30th July |
Turn 4 | 10th August - 13th August |
Turn 5 | 24th August - 27th August |
Turn 6 | 7th September - 10th September |

Uptime will run 12PM Saturday - 12PM Tuesday unless otherwise indicated (*). Uptime will always start and end at midday on the indicated dates. If any changes are made to these dates, the GM team will send an update.
Time in CryptoNet matches time in the real world. When the forum is open on the 29th of June for player use, it will also open for the first time in two months for characters (see: CryptoNet). Likewise, each turnsheet will represent the time between the end of one uptime and the start of the next.
CryptoNet will begin at midday on 29th June, and will run for four days every other week until midday on 24th September. Play will take place almost entirely online, although the final turn will be followed by a live session (date to be confirmed).
The game is designed such that players should feel free to participate as much or as little as they would like, and is supposed to mimic a forum in real-life in that respect. Characters will have real lives with (in some cases) real jobs, just as many players will, and so it is not expected or required for players to be participating at all times.
During uptime, you will be able to post on the forums and send emails as your character, in order to share information, partake in Encounters, and plan what to do next. At the end of each uptime, you will be able to submit a turnsheet, consisting of your plans for the coming downtime. The turnsheet deadline is 11.59AM on the Tuesday at the end of each uptime (unless otherwise indicated). Any received after the deadline with no prior agreement with GMs are unlikely to be processed - if you know you might miss a deadline, get in touch so the GM team can confirm whether or not we will be able to process your turnsheet. The GMs will then judge the results of your turnsheet over the downtime week, and report back to you on how everything went.
Before you submit a character, you may wish to check the pages listed on the contents bar to the left. Once you feel ready, head over to Character Creation to find out how to submit a character. Please do not create an account on the forums until your character has been approved.
You don't need any roleplaying experience to play CryptoNet, although if this is your first game (or first forum game), it might be a good idea to read over the introduction page and glossary for any terms you're unfamiliar with.
If you have any questions for the GM team, please feel free to get in touch at gm@cryptonet.chaosdeathfish.com - we'll try to get back to you as soon as possible.
This forum game is going to be run slightly differently to most Society Games. Because of this, and because the themes of the game involve the weirdest parts of the Internet and the supernatural, we would like to urge every player who has triggers or other content needs, no matter what they are, to send an email to the GMs to flag this in advance. This also includes gif warnings and similar requirements for colours and lights. Normal CAT Policy rules apply otherwise.
The structure and tone of this game are heavily based around the unexpected, stranger corners of the Internet and the supernatural. While we wish to emphasise that nothing that is forbidden under CAT Policy rules or our forbidden topics below will show up in this game at all, some aspects of the world we are building will reflect the character submissions we receive. Therefore we are not necessarily able to let players know what they’re going to encounter in advance. This is why we would like players to communicate with GMs about what we need to do to help you feel safe while exploring even the most surprising parts of the game.
We make player safety and comfort an absolute priority and any information/communication will be treated with the strictest confidence. Please feel free to send us a message if you have any questions or concerns. Thank you for your cooperation.
